![]() I don’t normally watch ‘funny’ TV programmes. ![]() ![]() My book club had a theme of ‘comedy’ this month which I really struggled with. Armed with common sense and a strong will, she resolves to take each of the family in hand Screamingly funny But Flora loves nothing better than to organise other people. At the aptly-named Cold Comfort Farm, she meets the doomed Starkadders: cousin Judith, heaving with remorse for unspoken wickedness Amos, preaching fire and damnation their sons, lustful Seth and despairing Reuben child of nature Elfine and crazed old Aunt Ada Doom, who has kept to her bedroom for the last twenty years. McGarry’s Easter Rising is a relatively unfamilar one. It is this material that gives his book its rich and fascinating texture. ![]() Many were previously utilised by Charles Townshend in his general account of the Rising, published in 2005, but McGarry’s use of them goes far beyond that of his predecessor. The key condition attached to the bureau’s work was that the material it collected would not be released until all of those who had contributed testimonies were dead: consequently they were not released until 2003. ![]() What makes The Rising stand out from its competitors (at least according to the blurb) is that it uses the vast corpus of testimonies collected by the Bureau of Military History in the 1940s and 1950s to illuminate the experience of the ‘rank and file’ who took part in the events of Easter week 1916. And Fearghal McGarry has written a very good one indeed.
